Neil Baker Sings . . .

About me . . . .

I joined a dance party band when I was in my mid 20’s, starting much later than many singers. Those first tentative, performances I sang backing vocals before progressing on to singing the odd solo song, the first being Angels by Robbie Williams. Confidence built, I was ready to venture into the solo world, mustering up just enough of my favourite songs to get through three half hour sets. Some of those songs still play a prominent role in my repertoire all these years later.

Following some solo success in local talent competitions, I paired up with another singer, Wes, to form Freeway, going on to become one of the most successful male duos in the region, our relaxed style on stage really endeared us to our audiences, along with the great range of classic pop songs.

Always open to try new things, the opportunity came up to sing with a newly formed rock band, Reloaded, through Jonno, a drummer friend at work, we went on to perform to thousands at festivals and events across the country, nothing beats having live music on stage with you! Through various line ups, I spent well over 10 amazing years with a great talented bunch of friends.

In 2019, another turn in the career road occurred, a real curve ball for me! A singer friend who made an appearance with his trio on the x-factor was looking for a couple of guys to join his classical crossover group going forward and asked Freeway to ‘try out’. This meant learning Italian songs and the classical style of singing from scratch, looking back on my first appearance in the Isle of Wight, my Italian came out more like gobblydegook!!

All this time, I was working full time in Human Resources, until the opportunity came up, with cruise ship contracts, to take the dive into being a professional singer. Unfortunately, Covid put a stop to this plan and changed my singing direction again. With a change in line up for the trio, to now include my amazingly talented son Sam, we began to build up the work again, exploring some amazing places in the world on both sides of the Atlantic. With a change of circumstances in the trio, it was a no brainer for me and Sam to form a father and son duo. We called ourselves Una Voce (One Voice). Of all the things I have done, nothing can quite compare to being on stage singing with Sam, the pride I have for him and us sometimes becomes a little overwhelming, even now.

I have crafted my individual shows to showcase my story from pop to classical singer and all of the bits in between. Hopefully you will enjoy the songs that I sing and understand a little more about the journey behind them.
